Those Jehovah’s Witnesses who claim to be of the 144,000 refer to themselves by many titles: the remnant, the faithful and discreet slave, and the anointed to name a few. I say that they refer to themselves by these titles because the governing body of Jehovah’s Witnesses who claim to be the spokesman for the 144,000 teaches that it is the remnant of the 144,000 in their role as the faithful and discreet slave who are responsible for the teachings put forth in the pages of The Watchtower and other publication of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. So when Watchtower publications speak of the faithful and discreet slave or the remnant or the anointed, the writers are referring to themselves.

Knowing that the words “Christ” and “Messiah” mean “anointed” and having taken this title on themselves certainly puts those self-proclaimed “anointed” Jehovah’s Witnesses in quite an elevated position. In fact they at one time, taught that they themselves plus Jesus Christ constituted a composite Christ:

“Messiah’s kingdom once established, Jesus and his glorified church constituting the great Messiah, shall minister the blessings to the people they have so long desired and hoped for and prayed might come.” – Millions Now Living Will Never Die, 1920, p 88

“The word Christ signifies anointed. Anointing means designation to official position in God’s arrangement. The Christ is the instrument or channel for the blessing of mankind. The Christ is composed of Jesus the great and mighty head, and 144,000 members.” – The Harp of God, 1921, p 187

“The new creation is The Christ. The Christ is a composite body made up of many members. The Head of The Christ is Jesus Christ, God’s beloved Son. Those who are taken from amongst men, justified, begotten and anointed by the spirit of Jehovah, and who then continue faithful unto death, will constitute the members of The Christ complete.” – Creation, 1927, p 192

While they no longer claim to be part of a “composite Christ”, in more recent times, this self-styled ‘anointed’ have proclaimed that in order to keep in a good relationship with God, one must remain united with them.

“To keep in relationship with ‘our Savior, God,’ the ‘great crowd’ needs to remain united with the remnant of spiritual Israelites.” – The Watchtower, November 15, 1979, p. 27

And finally they tell the other sheep that that attitude toward them (the “anointed”) and how they treat them will be the determining factor in their judgement by Christ.

“Your attitude toward the ‘wheatlike anointed brothers’ of Christ and the treatment you accord them, will be the determining factor as to whether you go into ‘everlasting cutting-off’ or receive ‘everlasting life’.” – The Watchtower, August 1, 1981, p. 26)

Notice in these quotes from the Watchtower that the “anointed” soften the blow of their words by referring to themselves in the third person. If you take the third-person speech out of that last quote, these who claim to be the ‘faithful slave’ are really saying:

“Your attitude toward the US and the treatment you accord US, will be the determining factor as to whether YOU go into ‘everlasting cutting-off’ or receive ‘everlasting life’.”

  1. Hi, interesting blog, i’m currently researching JW’s going undercover, good too see someone else pointing out that its a cult too…

  2. Hi Bob!

Even after I write this, I’m listening to you on JW infoline! LOVE your blog. It is a source of into for me when I do my studies. After being approached by J.W.’s over the Easter Holidays, I have been searching for the proverbial ‘magic bullet’ that will get J.W’s to think OUTSIDE Watchtower rules. As many have said, on sites like TowertoTruth.net, MMoutreachInc.com and others…there is NO magic bullet. Just like, if you want to lose weight, there is no REAL lasting substitute for the good old fashioned regimine of diet and exercise. In continuity, over months, years, results WILL come.

Well, the Holy Spirit is the same way, when we are faithful to use the Sword of the Spirit with J.W.’s At first, it’s a pain. A struggle. Like getting on an exercise bike or a treadmill that has, up to a point, been used as an extra clothes hanger! But the more you do it, the easier it gets….sometimes. Witnessing to J.W’s is like riding a STATIONERY BIKE uphill, but with God, ALL THINGS are POSSIBLE! Because ONLY GOD knows the true condition of that person’s life. How they’re feeling. It could be that they are LOOKING for an excuse to get out and our placing the seed of doubt (Rev 19:10, Rev 22:8 & John 20:28) could provide just that incentive.
So thank you, again, for providing those tools, both for those who are trapped in the (Watch)Tower but for all who are trying to help free them.

  3. OOOPS! I meant to say, “Even AS I write this…” but I wasn’t concentrating because I was too busy listening! Keep up the great Ministry!

“And so we come to the end of another Vetrenarian’s Hospital. Tune in next week, when you’ll hear Dr. Bob say….” (You mentioned something about The Muppet Show in your testimony and I just couldn’t resist!)

  4. Bro. Doc,Great site!Love the bridge picture. I was a J.W. for 30 years.5 years ago(or so),as I had been testing the faith,I realized what the Society had been teaching was not the Gospel of the Bible. After deep reading and thought and prayer I began to realize not only the truth about being born of the water(true instructions from Christ;John 4),but also of the Spirit(anointing of Holy Spirit as Jesus was). This adoption as sons is the GOSPEL of Christ. It is the way for any who want to be Christians to get on the path of enlightenment of the word, resist theworks of the flesh, have intimacy with our with it Lord and our Father Jehovah. The Holy Spirit, our helper,is the whole ticket. We need it in us ,with us,ahead of us.Keep getting filled with it,the word says. After receiving this,I was abused ,ridiculed, envied, and hated by witness friends, family, and witness hierarchy.I partook at the K.Hall for 2 years, then had enough friction, and needing to love and be loved,I resigned from W.T. That was over 3 years ago.It has been a stuggle for me,yet THEY support me daily.I never had a stronger faith than after the anointing. My relationship withFather,Son and the spirit in me is stronger than any fleshly family ties.As far as the W.T. teachings, all I can say is they were a stepping stone to the truth, not the whole truth. The word of God and the Holy Spirit can take you and anyone else all the way to where you need to go.This Governing Body of Witnesses is just filling up a large cup of false teaching and false pretense(knowingly or unknowingly) just like the Pharisees,or any clergy that subverts the true word.(Gal.1:8) Individually they will have their day to stand before the Lord and explain themselves. That will be embarassing to say the least.Sadly, most witnesses today and even ex-Witnesses don’t believe in the anointing.Personally,I feel all Christians have been instructed to seek the spirit. The 144,000 of Revelation as a number is as symbolic as every other freature in the book, but to say that is all that would receive the anointing thru the past 2000 years(appro. 65 per year) was never stated by Christ or the apostles, but they emphatically and clearly stated what to do.We have all the instructions in the word.So now that we’re free from that false church,be careful to just worry about being enrolled in the church of the firstborn as Christians.Expect some trials when you do.We all must be persecuted as a test of our faith. The W.T. can’t hurt us with the help from above.(1 John 2:26-29)

  5. Hi brother Bob, was doing research on the WTS “composite Christ” and came across your web and research. This was a great help. In your offer you said they no longer call themselves the composite Christ, but I found something very interesting in their current ‘light’… teaching that Jesus became “born again” and “anointed [Christ]” at water baptism, becoming a spiritual son of God, other baptized ones will thus also be born again AS spiritual sons of God:

***The GREATEST MAN WHO EVER LIVED, Ch17, Teaching Nicodemus***
“…”Unless anyone is born from water and spirit”, Jesus explains, “he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” When Jesus was baptized and holy spirit descended upon him, he was thus born “from water and spirit.” By the accompanying declaration from heaven, ‘This is my Son whom I have approved,’ God announced that he had brought forth a spiritual son having the prospect of entering into the heavenly Kingdom. Later, at Pentecost 33 C.E., other baptized ones will receive holy spirit and will thus also be born again as spiritual sons of God.”

The so called anointed class of the Watchtower Society are all spiritual sons co-equal to Jesus as “heirs of God” (Rom8:16-17). They still teach the composite body of anointed sons is called “the Christ”.

NOTE: Amazing that these so called “anointed” who wrote this article, only gave Jesus “the prospect of entering into the heavenly Kingdom.”

They further teach, that the anointed class are also “the seed of the woman” of Gen 3:15 [CAPS mine]:

    ***Watch Tower June 15, 2009, page 22, par 11***
“The Faithful Slave in Modern Times …Jesus’ words recorded at Matthew 24:45 clearly indicate that there would still be a faithful and discreet slave class living on earth during the time of the end. Revelation 12:17 refers to these ones as “THE REMAINING ONES” OF THE SEED OF THE WOMAN. As a group, this remnant has been appointed over all of Christ’s belongings here on earth. The “belongings” that the faithful steward is appointed to care for are the Master’s royal interests on earth, which include the Kingdom’s earthly subjects and the material facilities used in preaching the good news.”

This “seed of the woman” is a ” “Sacred Sacred” with many facets of universal importance”:

    ***Watch Tower Dec. 15, 2009, page 20, par 5***
The focus of the Messianic prophecies is a “sacred secret” with many facets of universal importance. (Col. 1:26, 27; Gen. 3:15) Included in that secret was the judgment against Satan the Devil, “the original serpent,” who plunged humankind into sin and death. (Rev. 12:9) How would that judgment be executed? Jehovah foretold that a “seed” to be produced by a “woman” would bruise Satan in the head. The foretold “seed” would crush the serpent’s head, eliminating the cause of rebellion, sickness, and death. However, by God’s permission, Satan would first inflict a symbolic heel wound on the woman’s “seed.”

I read they still teach a composite Christ anointed class of 144,000+1. And today they go further teaching, Gen3:15 “the seed of the woman” = is the anointed remnant of JWs.

They continue to teach a composite class idea, even with “the man of lawlessness”:

2Ths2:3 “the man of lawlessness” = composite cleargy class of Christendom.

    ***Watch Tower Sept 15, 2008, page 30***
    “STAND FIRM” (2 Thess. 1:1–3:18)
    Scriptural Questions Answered:
2:3, 8—Who is “the man of lawlessness,” and how will he be done away with? This composite “man” is the clergy class of Christendom. The one authorized to declare God’s judgments against the wicked and to give orders to execute them is “the Word”—God’s Chief Spokesman, Jesus Christ. (John 1:1) Hence, it can be said that Jesus will do away with the man of lawlessness “by the spirit [activating force] of his mouth.”

2:13, 14—How have the anointed Christians been ‘selected from the beginning for salvation’? The anointed as a class were foreordained when Jehovah purposed for the seed of the woman to bruise Satan in the head. (Gen. 3:15) Jehovah also prescribed the requirements they must meet, the work they would do, and the testing they would undergo. He thus called them for ‘this destiny.’ ”

    ***Watch Tower June 15, 2008, page 8, par 6***
“A Future Wrath From Which to Flee …6 Some among the early Christians turned apostate and gained followers. (Acts 20:29, 30) While Jesus’ apostles were living, they acted as “a restraint” against such apostasy, but after they died, many false Christian sects developed. Today, there are hundreds of conflicting religions in the realm of Christendom. The Bible pointed to the rise of Christendom’s clergy, describing them collectively as “the man of lawlessness” and “the son of destruction . . . whom the Lord Jesus will do away with . . . and bring to nothing by the manifestation of his presence.”—2 Thess. 2:3, 6-8.”

Conclusion from Watchtower Society teaching: “the seed of the woman” (Gen 3:15), is the composite remnant anointed class of Jehovah, this “seed” is “the Christ”. They also continue to teach “the seed” of promise is Christ with his joint-heirs (Rom8:16-17). And this anointed remnant is “the seed of Abraham” [Gal 3:16,29], this composite body totals 144,000 +1 = 144,001 spiritual sons of God. THEY are the composite “seed of the woman” Gen3:15. This is the Watchtower Society’s “sacred secret” that only those who are baptized into the organization learn about.

This is current doctrine and light in the Watchtower organization. Its quite insidious! It is the “false christ” Jesus warned us about.

Matthew 24:24 (Mark 13;22)”For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.”

shocking research this is; the more I dig into JWs teachings, the worse it gets. Love you Bob, and the Lord Jesus loves you more for taking you out of that deception unto Himself.

  6. Hi! I was studying this morning, and just noticed that in more recent pubs, they really don’t talk about the “composite Christ” thing any more. Do you know when this changed? Was it ever written about or acknowledged? This seems like a huge change to me. wow. — ALso, is that why they refer to Jesus as “the Christ”, because of the “composite Christ” teaching?

I LOVE your point of how they use the third person, and i love how you changed it to US. That really clarifies what they’re saying, doesn’t it?

  7. On the last page (p. 255) of the so-called Paradise Book (You Can Live Forever in Paradise on Earth) the question is answered What You Must Do to Live Forever (title of the last chapter):

Do not conclude that there are different roads, or ways, that that you can follow to gain life in God’s new system. There is only one. There was just the one ark that survived the Flood, not a number of boats. And there will be only one organization—God’s visible organization—that will survive the fast-approaching “great tribulation.” It is simply not true that all religions lead to the same goal. (Matthew 7:21-23; 24:21) You must be part of Jehovah’s organization, doing God’s will, in order to receive his blessing of everlasting life.—Psalm 133:1-3

Psalm 133:1-3 in my Bible doesn’t support that! Notice the VISIBLE organisation is the only way, replacing Jesus (cf. John 14:6), and belonging to this false Christ is a condition for everlasting life (= false gospel). The head of the false [body of] Christ is the so-called Faithful and Discreet Slave.

  8. About ourselves thinking we are the “in” group (whether it be 144,000 or only a half dozen or so) what came to mind was Romans 11.
